I would describe my interior design style as very eclectic. I like a lot of things in a lot of different colours and styles; not much really ‘matches’ or follows a theme. However, looking around the other day I noticed that without really realising it I have build up quite a collection of wildlife inspired decor. I love animals, so I suppose it is only right that they have began to invade my home. And since we are in rented and not able to have any pets really these little buddies are the best I can do for now.

I thought I’d introduce a few of my animal influences and how I came to own them:

Rubber Duck Collection – Various shops

Bathroom

I really love these guys – they make me smile every time I catch sight of them when I’m brushing my teeth! I went through a phase of collecting them for a while. I love how colourful they are and they really jazz up our white bathroom. I can’t remember where I got all of them individually but the far right one is from Harrods! So he certainly wasn’t cheap! They are a really good fun decoration though.

Crystal Bird Bedside Lamp -Wilkinson

Bedroom

Again, I bought this when I moved into my place for the first time. It’s sooo pretty,  the crystals are beautiful and it really goes with my vintage theme in the bedroom. Wilko are really good for home and interiors – I seem to remember I picked this up for about £20 and I’ve had it a good few years. It’s really lovely as a bedside lamp too because it gives out a really soft level of lighting, perfect for reading before bed.

Turtle Incense Stick Burner – Gift

Living Room

This was a gift from my mum and I’ve know idea where she got it from but I had to include it in this because it’s just gorgeous. Our living room is majority white and minimalistic (the joys of rented property) but I like to add pops of strong, bright colours to liven it up a bit – see my post on this here. This turtle is perfect because it’s a really nice bright turquoise colour which looks really striking on my white surfaces. I love the turtle too, I’ve been lucky enough to dive with giant sea turtles 3 times in the wild so they are very special to me.

Black and White Ornamental Elephant – Habitat

Living Room

Elephants are a big part of our lives and hold a special place in our hearts and our relationship. Elephants have always been my favourite animal – I spent time in an elephant sanctuary in Thailand with them and have always loved them. I also love what they represent; strength, wisdom and peacefulness. They are such amazing animals. A few years ago, long before we got engaged, Paul and I decided to get a matching tattoo as a symbol of our ‘forever’ commitment and we decided on a beautiful elephant design. So elephants have become an important symbol for us. We got this as a housewarming gift when we moved into our apartment and it’s gorgeous. I love the cream and grey colours, and it makes me smile everytime I look at it.

Elephant and Turtle Cuddly Toys! – Gifts

Living Room

Yes – I’m still a child inside and I still have cuddly toys on display! But these arnt worn out teddies they are ‘luxury’ toys which I have taken really good care of and are used for decorative purposes. They were both gifts – and are my favourite animals! I love the turtle particularly because it’s so colourful and my brother bought it back from Sri Lanka for me.

What kind of home decor style do you like? Do you have much wildlife influence in your home?

If, like me and most twenty-somethings trying to make it in this world, you are renting your current place of residence then you may be familiar with the term I have affectionate coined; The Magnolia Nightmare.

We live in a small (and by small I mean smaller than some 4-man tents) apartment in London and the bedroom kinda leads into the living room which leads into the kitchen so it’s all painted the same shade of lovely Magnolia. Which is not really an issue except for the fact that it’s so boring. And unfortunately when you don’t own the house it’s not your colour scheme to change.

So, a little tip to combat the cream, use accessories to add mad pops of colour to your home! I love bright colours, particularly pinks (can you tell?!) and pastel tones, so I have furnished and accessorized my flat within an inch of it’s life to give it some oomph. And I must say I think it looks fab.

Choosing really strong colours on an otherwise plain background is a really nice style choice for those who don’t want to invest too much time and money in a property which isn’t theirs – you can always take the soft furnishings with you It also means you can update your interior easily as styles and your tastes change. It’s not necessary to spend a fortunate on your place, a few well placed things can make all the difference and can say a lot about your personality. Plus, so many high street shops now do really good quality homewear at bargain prices.

A few pops of colour in my apartment:

Bright Cushions – Primark.

Tropical Fabric Birds – Gift.

Handmade pink Dreamcatchers – Etsy (read my post here).

Audrey Hepburn pop art canvas – charity shop!

This post is a tribute to the second love of my life, my first real pet of my own, my beautiful hamster. The Pet Tag:

WHAT IS YOUR PET’S NAME?

Pumpkin 🙂 mainly because of her colour but also because it’s a such a cute name.

WHAT KIND OF PET IS SHE AND WHAT BREED?

She is a Syrian hamster, ginger and white.

HOW OLD IS YOUR PET AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD YOUR PET FRIEND?

We got her when she was a few weeks old and now she is about 18 months! Sadly, hamsters don’t usually live much past 2 years but she’s still very active and spirited.

HOW DID YOU GET YOUR PET?

She was a Christmas present from Paul! Obviously, he didn’t gift wrap her! He bought me the cage, food, bedding and accessories to open on the day and then we went to choose her together the day after Boxing Day. I knew she was the one for us straight away because she had such a gorgeous face and was so sleepy in her cage! Here’s a pic from when we first got her.

WHAT ARE SOME QUIRKY THINGS ABOUT YOUR PET’S PERSONALITY?

She loves Blueberries but doesn’t eat any other fruit. Hamsters are supposed to eat all fruits but she’s fussy! She also likes carrots and tries to put the whole thing in her cheeks and it gets stuck! So funny to watch. She also thinks of herself as a bit of a gymnast and when she wakes up in the evening and wants attention she hangs from her ceiling bars by one hand!

WHAT DOES YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR PET MEAN TO YOU?

She’s our first pet ‘as a couple’ and we love her to bits. We treat her like our child! She’s given us a lot of giggles and fun and she’s a really lovely and tame hamster. We love you Pumpkin!

Something a bit different today. I have recently been getting into crystals and I find their different meanings and properties really fascinating.  I started buying crystals when I came across a lovely lady who sells them in Camden market, for a reasonable price, and I just felt really drawn to her. She is so knowledgeable about the crystals and I felt such a fantastic energy from her and her stall.

Of all of the crystals I have always felt most drawn to the Rose Quartz and I have quite a few pieces now. It may be because it’s one of the ‘prettiest’ crystals and is a lovely shade of pink, but I think it’s because of its properties and energy that I feel so connected to it.

Rose Quartz is the stone of the heart, both its colour and energy represent love and caring.

Having it in the house can bring love and protection to its inhabitants.

It is said to speak directly to the heart chakra and can heal emotional wounds, ease stress and bring feelings of peace and happiness.

I use Rose Quartz as a decoration and an active crystal. If I’m feeling stressed or anxious I hold it close to my chest to cleanse my heart chakra and feel that sense of balance. I also have a rose quartz which takes a tea light candle inside, once the candle is burnt the stone becomes warm and is really lovely to sit an mediate with.

I believe in the spiritual powers of crystals, but whether you do or not they are a lovely addition to the home and Rose quartz is certainly one of the most beautiful.

Ever since I had my own place there is one thing I cannot resist buying for my flat – pretty sofa cushions. There is so much choice! And so many lovely ones. Our sofa is overflowing. And I recently bought two more. Oops.

Primark’s cushion game is strong at the moment. In fact all of their home wear seems to be bang on trend and for £5 per cushion?? Come onnnnn how could you not? Look how pretty they are!

As far as I’m concerned there is no such thing as too many sofa cushions and these are a fabulous addition to my lounge. I’m seriously impressed with Primark’s home wear and no doubt I will be buying further cushions from them in the future! Keep it up, Primark!
