DIY wedding makeup. *Screams of horror*. I know, I know, my friends were horrified too. But I’ll let you into a secret..

Unless you want perfectly blended smokey eyes with Kardashian style contouring which needs a professional – you can do it!

And it will be fine!

I wanted a natural, glowy and summery makeup look for my wedding. I have little makeup experience and hardly wear any on a day to day basis. With a few makeup lessons with Bare Minerals and Laura Mercier, a few YouTube tutorials and some good quality makeup products; I did this:

I am so happy with how it turned out. The best decision that I made was to invest a lot of effort (which means money) in preparing for my wedding day. I had mechanical facials every four weeks for 6 months prior to the big day. Manual facials are lovely but I feel having a mechanical or ‘electrical’ facial gives the skin an extra kick and can really help give you that ‘glow from within’. I alternated the microdermabrasion facials (removal of the dead skin cells for deep exfoliation) with the oxygen facials oxygen is pushed into the skin for a pumped up and refreshed look) and I found this to be a winning combination. The only important thing to remember is to have your last microderm no less than 4 weeks before the wedding as it can leave the skin slightly irritated and pink.

Teeth wise I didn’t bother with the expensive teeth whitening that many brides do. I used Oral B Luxe White (Glamorous) toothpaste and mouthwash for 4 weeks proceeding the wedding and it did the job! I didn’t have too much discoloration to begin with so didn’t need anything heavy duty but it certainly worked and I was surprised how white my teeth looked in the pictures!

I also invested in having an LVL Lash Lift. This was honestly the best thing I did regarding my bridal beauty and I would recommend it to any bride who doesn’t want the faff of falsies. I have long lashes but they are dead straight and the lash lift curls the lashes from the root and basically makes them curly, giving your eyes a much more open and doll eyed-look.  I’m really pleased with how they look in the pictures.  I’m not going to lie – the process is not a picnic. It takes about 40 minutes with your eyes shut and various liquids being put on your lashes but it’s well worth it.

Finally, I splashed out and got my brows threaded at Blink Brow Bar, London. They are on the pricey side as far as threading goes but they do an amaaaazing shape and, once done, my perfect brows lasted 3 weeks and didn’t need any filling in or makeup on the day.

The key to perfecting a DIY look is practice and planning. I went for makeup lessons at several counters; MAC (for eyes), Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, Bare Minerals and Lancome. I was never 100% happy with any of the completed looks (which reinforced the fact I was right to do my own – I’m fussy!!) but I liked elements and took bits from all of them to come up with completed look. I didn’t scrimp on the products and bought a few a month until I had everything I wanted and then I practiced, practiced, practiced at home.

The makeup I used to achieve this look:

FACE

  • Bare Minerals Prime Time primer; Original.
  • Bare Minerals mineral foundation; Fairly Medium.
  • Benefit bronzer; Hoola.
  • Bare Minerals Bareskin concealer; Medium.
  • Bare Minerals Mineral Veil setting powder.
  • Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage face concealer.
  • Bare Minerals compact blusher; The One.
  • Bare Minerals compact highlight; READY Luminizor Duo.

EYES

  • Laura Mercier Eye Basic; Flax.
  • MAC Eye Shadow; Dazzlelight.
  • MAC Eye Shadow; A Natural Flirt.
  • MAC Eye Shadow; Corduroy.
  • Lancôme Hypnose Mascara  (waterproof!)

I used the 3 MAC eye-shadows with a MAC blending brush and blended them all out to create a dewy, soft pink look with a subtle shimmer.  I had been toying with wearing a chocolate brown eyeliner but with the lifted lashes I felt I didn’t really need it.

LIPS

  • MAC Lipstick; Angel.

I would encourage any bride thinking about DIY to go for it. You really don’t necessarily need a makeup artist, with the right products, practice and the ability to remain calm on the day (!!!) you can certainly do it yourself 🙂

Any other DIY brides out there?

So, I have a bit of a confession. I’ve already admitted to being super low maintenance chick (read my post here) but it’s time to CONFESS beauty bloggers that I only own 7 lipsticks.

Whaaaaaaaaat.

I know, I know, BUT hear me out. I don’t like waste, clutter or spending money and each of these lip colours has a very specific purpose and place in life. I use all of them. And I love all of them. And honestly, I don’t need anymore

So here is what has made the cut to join my very exclusive club which is; my lipstick collection:

MY EVERYDAY NUDE

This is a lovely, neutral pinky brown which is really good for everyday/ work or a natural makeup look. I love the consistency because it’s really moisturising and has a fairly decent staying power – although does fade off a bit after a few hours.

MY HOLIDAY LIPSTICK

Ola senorita! This cute coral is perfect for holidays and looks gorge with a bit of a tan (or bronzer). As with all MAC lippys it’s good quality and lasts for ages.

MY BRIDAL LIPSTICK / 2ND CHOICE NUDE

I bought this for my bridal makeup and I’ve fallen in love with it and now alternate it as a second choice for my everyday nude. Although it is so similar in name it’s actually quite different to Angelic; much more pink and girly. I love it.

MY FEELING A BIT JAZZY LIPSTICK

As you can see, this lipstick has been well used and well worn at the bottom of my clutch bag. So well worn in fact the name has rubbed off and I don’t know the same of it! Anyway, it’s a baby pink lipstick which I usually layer up with a bit of gloss when it’s paaaarttyyyy time.

MY FEELING VERY JAZZY LIPSTICK

Only used with caution. This is very bright. I classify it as a lipstick because the colour is so strong but it comes in a sort of gloss format. You apply it and it dries matte and really, really strong. It looks fab when wanting to make a lip statement on a night out.

MY RED ONE

Everyone’s got to have a bright red lippy right?! I don’t wear it much, but I do love this one. It’s a really deep red but the best thing is that it stays put all night and doesn’t smudge at all! Perfect red lips every time.

So, as you can see, they all know their place! And I don’t need too much space in my makeup drawer for them. Generally, I don’t like to have too much choice in term of makeup colours, knowing where I stand with my special few is much more up my street. Plus, they are tried and tested and I love them all – so why deviate?!

How many lipsticks do you own?

I am DIYing my wedding makeup! Shock, horror! No, it’s sensible for two reasons. 1) (The most obvious reason) I’m getting hitched in Greece! Even if I hired a Greek makeup artist there would be not chance for a trial or see any of their work beforehand. 2) I hardly wear any makeup and I am soooo fussy about how it has to look.

So there you go, I’m doing it myself.

I did, however, admit to myself that I needed to spend some decent money on some decent products. So I set myself a £250 budget and have spent the last few months trotting around various makeup counters in John Lewis trying different things. Here’s what I have ended up with:

FACE

  • Bare Minerals Prime Time primer in Original
  • Bare Minerals Original mineral foundation in Fairly Medium
  • Bare Minerals Warmth bronzer
  • Bare Minerals Bareskin under eye concealer in Medium
  • Bare Minerals Mineral Veil setting powder
  • Laura Mercier Secret Camoflage face concealer
  • Bare Minerals compact blusher in The One

EYES

  • Laura Mercier Eye Basic in Flax
  • MAC Eye Shadow Dazzlelight
  • MAC Eye Shadow A Natural Flirt
  • MAC Eye Shadow Corduroy
  • Laura Mercier Eye Shadow Coffee Ground
  • Laura Mercier Crème Eyeliner in Espresso
  • Lancôme Hypnose Mascara  (waterproof!)

LIPS

  • MAC Lipstick Angel
  • Laura Mercier Lipstick Angelic

Coincidence that they are so similarly named! I can’t decide at the moment I love them both.

So, this is the look I’ve ended up with. I’ve practised the full look a few times and I’m really happy with it. The eye shadows blend well and give a nice pinky/brown which isn’t too pink and I love the Hypnose mascara.  I’m also loving the Bare Minerals base at the moment and I think its absolutely perfect for natural, barely there bridal makeup, and I think it will be perfect for a destination wedding too!  You can see my review of the Bare Minerals products here.

Overall I’m really pleased with the look and I think it will look lovely on the day 🙂
